Court Process

How do I check my court case status and next hearing date?

Simple answer

Use the free eCourts Services website or mobile app. Enter your 16-character CNR number, or search by case number, party name or advocate name. You can see the next hearing date, the case stage and past orders.

Real-life examples

Gurpreet in Ludhiana has a property suit in the district court. She types the CNR number her lawyer gave her into the eCourts app and sees the next date and the last order, without going to court.

Ramesh doesn't know his CNR number. He selects his state, district and court complex on eCourts, searches by his name and the year, and finds his cheque bounce case.

Fatima's appeal is pending in the Supreme Court, so it is not on the district court pages. She checks its status on the Supreme Court website using the diary number she got at filing.

What should you do?

  1. 1Get your CNR number from your lawyer or the court office. It is a 16-character code; type it without spaces.
  2. 2Open the eCourts Services app or website and search by CNR, case number, party name, advocate name or FIR number.
  3. 3Note the next date, court number and stage of the case. Download orders as PDF and keep copies.
  4. 4On the hearing day, check the cause list (the day's list of cases) for your item number.
  5. 5For High Court cases, use that High Court's case status page; for the Supreme Court, use its website with your diary or case number.
  6. 6If the status looks wrong or isn't updated, ask at the court's filing counter or help desk.

Exceptions & limits

  • Online status is only information. The court's own order sheet is the official record, so confirm important dates with your lawyer or the court.
  • Some sensitive cases, such as those involving children or sexual offences, may show limited details online to protect privacy.
